The Content Editor Screen (also referred to at times as the Text Editor Screen) is a dizzying array of options. Very few options are necessary, but it helps to know what they all do.
Below is the Content Editor Screen for Joomla 1.0 (Certain fields are required).
- Title: The Title of Your Entry
- Title Alias:
[I use this for internal (unpublished) comments only – this does not
display on the site anywhere or appear to have any function in Joomla.
Not really sure why it's even there.]
- Section: Choose the best option.
- Category: Choose the best option.
- Image Manager Icon: Use this icon
to upload and insert images.
- PDF Manager Icon: Use this
to upload and insert PDF downloads (can include the PDF icon, file size and title)
- Intro Text: review this post on how to safely copy and paste content from Word, email or other website into your Joomla Content Editor Screen. Intro Text = Teaser paragraph. User will be presented with a "Read More" to view all text.
- Main Text: Complete text after user clicks “Read More” or the navigation item directly.
! TIP: Your content detail pages on your website (the ones that show the full article) by default display Intro Text and Main Text, not just Maon text. So, Intro Text and Main Text need to be written as one article.
- Publish Time: You can specify a publish date that's later than the date you create the post.
- SAVE

Below is the Article (Content) Editor Screen for Joomla 1.5 (Certain fields are required).
- Title: The Title of your article or page should be written here
- Title Alias: [I use this for internal (unpublished) comments only – this does not display on the site anywhere or appear to have any function in Joomla. Not really sure why it's even there.]
- Section: This is for organizing your articles/pages so you can find them – Choose the best option of where this article/page would go.
- Category: This is another level of organization for your articles/pages – Choose the best option of where this article/page would go (what it is a part of). For example, if you have a Press and Publications section and this new article is going in that section on the news page (blog layout) then you click on Press & Publications for the Section and News for the category.
- Image Manager Icon: Use this icon
to upload and insert images.
- Read More Icon:
This button is used for pages that have a lot of content (This feature can only be used on blog layout pages). This adds a page break to the content and hides the additional text until the user clicks on the “read more” link after which it is all displayed. This helps to keep your pages short.
- PDF Manager Icon: Use this
to upload and insert PDF downloads (can include the PDF icon, file size and title)
- AVR Media Button: Use this button
to insert other media such as personal videos or youtube videos.
- Parameters: This section is used to specify the publishing date if later than the day you create the article/page. Also, author and other details are listed here.
- Parameters (Advanced): This section is used to set all of the preferences for your page/article. For example whether or not you want the author and creation date to show, whether you want the title to show. In order to change any elements you click on the drop down menu and click on “show” or “hide” any elements that you desire.
- Publish/Save Menu: If you click on Apply your changes will be saved so you can see how the page looks in another window (without logging out of the page). Or, if you click Save your changes will be applied and you will be brought back to the article manager view. Close, simply logs you out of the page without saving any changes that were made. Preview allows you to view what the page would look like without actually saving/applying the changes to the live site.
