Why Joomla, and Why Not Joomla?
Sunday, 23 March 2008
Why Joomla?
  • 180,000 Web developers registered on the forums (as of March 2008) where non-technical and hard core developers alike share code, fixes and help eachother. It's disturbingly Utopian.
  • Push button installation using a host that offers "Cpanel and Fantastico"
  • Maintenance tools with big, clear buttons that make changing content really unintimidating for non-technical, sometimes utterly Web-phobic administrators (my clients run the gamut from very savvy to very resistant)
  • 2880+ Components, Modules and Plugins that make your site do ... way more than you ever need.
  • Joomlancers.com - amazing resource for Joomla programmers ready to pounce on your project or pieces of projects. Looks like 50+ projects per day get posted there. It's hoppin.

Why Not Joomla
  • Lack of multi-site support. Joomla is not an enterprise CMS
  • Strong workflow tools

Joomla 1.0 isn't set up to handle multiple websites with a single CMS, so it can't support an org that wants to invest in a single platform to power diverse websites. Some extensions claim to enable multi-site publilshing, but I haven't heard good things. I also haven't found a way to architect content structure so that it's easy to add 4th and 5th tier content. After 3 levels, admin gets tricky.

What do you mean by "not enterprise." Could you be more specific?
