How do free websites make money? It's been on my mind a lot lately, as my company Soapbox delves deeper into the business of online community development. For this study (*I use the term "study" loosely as I used no scientific methods in documenting my observations), I looked at Craigslist.org, UrbanBaby.com, Facebook.com, LinkedIn.com, and Treehugger.com.

We are currently working on the following enhancements:

Enhancements 

• Change logged out interface so that the top navigation only shows "Please login or register to post" vs the New Post/Refresh buttons which don't make sense out of context
• Change graphical buttons to text for easier translation
• Strip out all english text into a separate english.php for easier translation into other languages
• All end user to "Email me replies to this post" - defaults to yes, remembers their last choice
• Enable basic HTML: bold, italic and hyperlinks
• Change the "..." to (... more)
• 1.5 Native release

Bugs

• Accents for Spanish, Italian, French, Swedish etc users don't output properly. This isn't as easy to fix as we initially thought, but we are working on it.  Will be resolved in the 1.5 native release.

Configuration Options
Settings include

• Number of conversations per page (default = 10)
• Make entire Forum anonymous (If Yes, all usernames associated to posts are hidden in public view; default = no)
• Link usernames to Community Builder profiles (If you have Profiles enabled, all posts will link to a user's profile; default = no)
